Ten students from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) and the Zurich University of the Arts have developed a two-wheeled wheelchair that has the ability to climb stairs. They have named it Scalevo.
The chair uses gyroscopic technology found in Segways and has the ability to go up or down stairs with a 17 to 34 degree slope. The team was able to do this with rubber tracks to make the chair safe. “Tracks are excellent for this use case because they have a very large footprint, “Miro Voellmy, one of the students, told Reuters. “It just feels like you're driving up a ramp because they're so flat and they adapt to the stair profile.”
Scalevo is not yet commercially available, but its makers think that it will not be much more expensive than traditional wheelchairs. The video below shows the Scalevo in action.
