-- To: Bureau of Developmental Disability Services Providers From: Nicole Norvell, Director, Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services Re: Request for Funds Date: March 27, 2015 The Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services’ (DDRS) Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services (BDDS) is pleased to announce the release of a Request for Funds (RFF) opportunity to award grant funds for sheltered workshop transition services. The week saw the Governor sign the Religious Freedom bill into law as protesters marched on Capitol Avenue outside his office windows and some conventions and large businesses announced they might look to do business outside of Indiana. Some legislative committees will hold their final meeting for the session next week, though others will meet for two more weeks. Over the past several years, the disability services industry has seen an increased focus on transitioning to greater use to community-based day and employment supports. Through the dialog and debate about how to work towards this outcome, INARF has emphasized three key points. First, the path to achieving this outcome is not by removing options from but by building capacity that results in greater choice and access. Second, any efforts toward developing solutions should tap into the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the provider community – seeking their experience and expertise to develop thoughtful and meaningful approaches. Third, any potential solutions should be explored, piloted, and tested in order to effectively inform long-term policies versus rushing to implement a systemic approach. Identifying signs and symptoms of sexual abuse in children with disabilities can often be difficult. To help ensure parents of those with disabilities have the tools available to deal with this difficult issue, Heather Dane, Family Leadership Fellow, Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) Program, Riley Child Development Center, created a guide in coordination with Carol Pool, MSW, Prevention Specialist at Prevent Child Abuse Indiana.
