The 2016 Indiana General Assembly convenes for a short session this afternoon. Since bill filing began in December, over 170 bills have been introduced. INARF and our consultants are tracking several bills related to our legislative agenda.
Notably, Senator Luke Kenley has introduced Senate Bill 11 regarding ABLE savings accounts for persons with a disability. If passed, the legislation would allow individuals with disabilities to create an ABLE account which can receive contributions to help pay for the care of the individual. Governor Pence affirmed his support for this legislation when he announced his 2016 legislative agenda on Monday. The legislation was championed by The Arc of Indiana and INARF applauds The Arc and Senator Kenley’s efforts to address one of our legislative priorities and Governor Pence’s support for the legislation.
As INARF first announced in November, our top three legislative priorities for 2016 include expanding training concerning interactions with individuals with disabilities for some safety and health care professionals, increasing employment opportunities for Hoosiers with disabilities through the State Use Law, and maintaining tax credits, deductions, and exemptions important to INARF members.
