Nimmer also recently contributed to the Huffington Post Education section. She tells a story about training with her guide dog, Nacho. She attributes the story of pushing through fears and obstacles in training Nacho with her twenty-three years as an educator. “When you are afraid, you just need to do the next best thing you can, and then the next, and then the next.” Nimmer writes, “Eventually, you will work your way around the doubt.”
Inside Indiana Business with Gerri Dick featured Kathy Nimmer, 2015 National Teacher of the Year Finalist who lost her sight as a teenager due to a rare disease. Nimmer, who most recently won 2015 Indiana Teacher of the Year, was interviewed about her experiences leading up to her choice to become a teacher and the challenges she faced.
“I think when you’re pushed you either know that you’re not in the right area or you are confirmed over and over again that you are indeed in the right area. That area - for me - is being an educator,” Nimmer said. “And I’m more resilient. I’m more creative. I’m more persistent than I would have been if I hadn’t had a hard start.”
