Nearly 100 members and legislative champions of The Arc of Indiana and INARF gathered at the January 7 Critical Issues Forum to celebrate, exchange information, and engage in thought-provoking conversations about issues facing the industry. The day began with opening remarks and an overview of The Arc and INARF’s legislative agendas from Kim Dodson, The Arc of Indiana Executive Director, and Kim Opsahl, INARF President/CEO, followed by a presentation of data from The State of the State in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Dr. David Braddock’s presentation included information concerning a wide variety of topics related to the industry and provides information INARF members can use to educate legislators, their Boards, self-advocates, and staff. The presentation is available here. After lunch, Indiana State Ways and Means Committee Chairman Tim Brown and Indiana State Representative Greg Porter provided information about effective advocacy and highlights to expect during the 2016 legislative session. Kim Dodson and Kim Opsahl updated members on upcoming challenges and opportunities for our industry, and concluded the day by moderating a panel of industry experts including Dr. Braddock, John Dickerson, Jim Hammond, and Dr. David Mank.
Throughout the day, certain themes resonated with attendees, including the constant presence of change in the industry and the importance of families, self-advocates, and providers as agents of change. Presenters emphasized that the success of members of The Arc of Indiana and INARF is linked to building on our past and continuing to work together to advance our collective leadership and build our critical resources.
